The NBA 2K series is the last word in basketball gaming experiences. A behemoth series, the franchise sells in its millions on release each year. It’s been the dominant option for fans for almost three decades. The series, as with any other long-running franchise, has highs and lows, but it mostly delivers what fans want every year.

However, the NBA 2K series is not the only option out there. Particularly in an era where gamers are well aware that AAA titles can be tough on the wallet. Below, we will highlight six of those alternatives from different platforms and genres. Some premium titles, others cheap or free to play. But all great options for basketball gaming fans:

1. NBA The Run

NBA The Run launched on June 9 across PC, PS5 and Xbox. As you can see, it’s an officially branded NBA game. It is a fast-paced 3v3 arcade basketball game with 30+ NBA stars and streetball court variants from around the world. It’s got some really positive reviews so far, though we will have to see how much it has in terms of longevity. From what we have seen of it so far, it leans into the spirit of classics like NBA Street and NBA Jam. Great stuff.

2. Basketball Classics

Basketball Classics is available on Steam, and it feels like NES-style throwback. Perfect if you want to experience retro-style basketball gaming. The game is stripped back by design, so it’s a good option for those who choose to eschew modern gaming with too many complicated features. It is, however, a casual game, one where you would play for a short 20-minute session rather than a longer campaign. A good option for casual gamers.

3. Dunk Lords

Dunk Lords doesn’t go heavily on the realism. In fact, it’s a hybrid sports game and beat ‘em up, complete with over-the-top special moves and, of course, plenty of slam dunks. It’s fairly comprehensive, though, as it comes with 20 unique characters, each with their own set of special abilities and skills, both for basketball and fighting. Yes, it’s a little chaotic and won’t appeal to purists, but this is an excellent alternative to the realistic basketball games out there.

4. Freestyle 2: Street Basketball

We’ve picked Freestyle 2: Street Basketball because it is one of the best free-to-play online arcade basketball games on Steam right now. As the title suggests, the game is all about reimagining the games you’d play on the street as a kid. Players create their own character and compete in an online street league. It will not be for everyone, especially those who prefer polished single-player modes, but it scratches a different itch from 2K.

5. NBA Slam Dunk Roulette

Roulette anyone? Yes, there is an officially branded NBA roulette game. Right now, it is available as an exclusive game at DraftKings Casino. The game blends classic American roulette with customizable options based around all your favorite NBA teams. Visually, it’s fantastic, with 3D graphics and incredible camera shots. It doesn’t deviate too much from the classic roulette rules or gameplay, but goes big on the NBA design and theme. A really great option if you want a change from the usual casino table game design.

6. Basketball GM

Basketball GM is another free game. It is a browser-based single-player basketball management simulation where you build a team into a dynasty, manage rosters, guide teams to the playoffs, and do all the stuff that an NBA GM aspires to do. For players who spend more time in 2K’s MyNBA mode than actually playing games, Basketball GM might be the best alternative.
