The Giants Can’t Ignore the Surprising Attention Their Struggling TE Is Generating

The NFL’s struggling tight end position has been in the spotlight with a number of players putting up big numbers this season. Some blame it on the fact that teams are relying more and more on spread offenses, while others point to an evolution among defenses, which have started placing heavy pressure on QBs instead of rushing four pass-rushers at all times.

Evan Engram, the Giants’ first-round choice (No. 23 overall) in 2017, has struggled with consistency in the New York offense. This season, he has only caught 20 receptions for 171 yards and has failed to score a touchdown.
In all honesty, Engram hasn’t had much success with the Giants in his whole career. He had a strong rookie year. However, he hasn’t progressed much after then.
Engram hasn’t topped 700 receiving yards since 2017, and his career catch rate of 61.3 percent is the lowest of his career. Last year, Engram was officially chosen to the Pro Bowl. However, it seems that a defective voting mechanism was to blame. In 2020, his stats were nowhere near those of the league’s best tight ends (654 receiving yards, one touchdown).
Despite Engram’s failure to live up to his first-round billing, clubs from all around the league are checking in on his availability. Engram will be a free agency at the conclusion of the season, making him a good possibility for a trade deadline.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that “several clubs” are interested in the Giants’ underperforming pass-catcher.

The Bills, Saints, Vikings, Packers, and Titans, according to SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano, are all possible landing locations. In their own way, each of these teams makes sense as a landing location for Engram. As they prepare for a playoff push, they’re all seeking for reinforcements.
Landing with one of these clubs might help Engram have a successful second half of the season, allowing him to demand more money in the summer.
Is it possible for the Giants to close this deal?
Despite the league’s rumored interest in Engram, SNY’s Vacchiano says New York isn’t sure whether a deal will be completed before the trade deadline. The Giants are open to trading him, but are concerned about his true worth.
“Others clubs are interested in adding weapons to their offense, and some could absolutely use a tight end,” one NFL source tells Vacchiano. “However, there aren’t many of them.” And if you absolutely need a tight end, there are often better options available.”
In the end, the Giants shouldn’t be too cautious. It’s a terrific outcome to get some value out of Engram during a lost season. Moving ahead, New York needs as much draft capital as humanly feasible.
