Home Runs and Playoff Races: What to Watch in MLB This September

September brings the MLB regular season to its decisive stage. Division races narrow, Wild Card positions become more important, and individual statistical battles have only a few weeks left to develop. Every remaining series provides another piece of the postseason picture.

For fans, the final month offers more to follow than wins and losses. Home run races, remaining schedules, direct matchups, run differential and postseason seeding all provide context for why particular games matter as the regular season approaches its conclusion.

Follow the Home Run Race

The 2026 home run race gives fans an individual storyline to follow alongside the postseason chase. Kyle Schwarber, Yordan Alvarez, Junior Caminero, Ben Rice, and Matt Olson have all featured prominently among the leading power hitters this season, leaving a competitive race entering September.

Season totals provide the starting point, but September performance will continue to shape the leaderboard. A player who produces several multihomer games can close a small gap within days. Recent extra-base production and expected lineup position provide additional context, although short stretches of power production do not necessarily predict what follows.

For fans and bettors considering an MLB home run parlay, the matchup deserves as much attention as the season total. Opposing pitchers, stadium characteristics, recent power production and expected lineup position provide relevant matchup context, while previous results against similar pitching deserve less weight when based on a small sample.

Focus on the Closest Divisions

September standings deserve frequent attention because small gaps can disappear quickly. The AL East has developed into one of the notable 2026 races, with Tampa Bay, New York, and Boston all spending significant portions of the season in competitive positions.

Several factors provide additional context beyond the number of games separating the teams:

  • Remaining meetings between division rivals can create significant standings movement,
  • Home and road records provide context for where important series will be played,
  • Run differential shows how scoring and prevention compare across the season,
  • Records against winning clubs provide additional context about previous results against stronger competition.

Head-to-head games become especially important during September. A contender does not need to rely on another result when it has an opportunity to directly gain ground against the team it is chasing. The remaining schedule adds important context to the current standings.

Keep the Wild Card Race in View

Division leaders receive much of the attention, but the Wild Card standings also feature important races throughout September. Three Wild Card teams from each league reach the postseason, leaving several clubs with something meaningful to pursue during the closing weeks.

  • Track the Cutoff: The most useful reference point is the final qualifying position. Fans can compare nearby teams with that cutoff rather than focusing only on their overall records. The significance of a small gap increases as the remaining schedule gets shorter.
  • Study the Schedule: Remaining opponents can provide important context. A club facing several direct postseason competitors has a different path from one playing teams well outside the race. Consecutive road series also add travel and home-field context to a difficult stretch.
  • Check Recent Results: Recent results show which teams have gained or lost ground in the standings, but short stretches should not be viewed alone. Run differential, opponent quality, injuries and upcoming matchups provide additional context for those results.

Reviewing baseball archives and news provides additional context on roster changes, player availability and other developments surrounding contenders during the final weeks. Past coverage also shows how current results compare with earlier stages of the season.

Look Beyond the Win Column

September standings continue to change as results accumulate, making supporting performance metrics useful for understanding how teams reached their current positions. Run differential offers one straightforward comparison by measuring total runs scored against total runs allowed.

Several indicators are particularly useful during the final month:

  • Run differential provides context for the strength behind a win-loss record,
  • Home and road splits show where a team has produced its strongest results,
  • Records against winning clubs provide context about previous performance against stronger opponents,
  • Recent results show whether a contender has gained or lost ground in the standings.

These numbers provide different pieces of context when considered together. A strong recent record takes on different context if most victories came against struggling opponents. Similarly, a contender with a healthy run differential but several narrow losses presents additional information that the standings alone do not show.

Pay Attention to Postseason Seeding

Reaching the postseason is only part of the September objective. Final seeding determines which teams receive byes into the Division Series and which clubs begin the postseason in the Wild Card Series.

The postseason format makes several September races worth following:

  • The top two division winners in each league receive byes into the Division Series,
  • The remaining division winner becomes the third seed,
  • Three additional teams qualify through the Wild Card standings,
  • The higher-seeded club hosts every game of its Wild Card Series.

The 2026 Wild Card Series is scheduled to begin on September 29. With the regular season ending September 27, only one off-day separates the two. Clubs competing for seeding may also weigh immediate results against rotation plans, bullpen usage, player health and preparation for a possible Wild Card Series.

September Sets the Stage for October

September baseball combines individual achievements with increasingly important team results. A short power surge changes the home run leaderboard, while a head-to-head series creates direct movement within a close division or Wild Card race.

The final weeks also establish the path through October. Remaining schedules, direct matchups, statistical leaders, team performance and postseason positioning provide the context behind what is at stake as the 2026 regular season reaches its conclusion.
