The Stanley Cup is the most prestigious trophy in professional hockey. It is awarded to the winners of the National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs. The cup is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, who was the Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893. He donated the cup as a prize for the best amateur hockey team in Canada.

The names inscribed in the silver bands around the trophy represent all past winners of the cup. The most recent names are at the top, and the older names are at the bottom.

The cup was first presented in 1893 to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) hockey team. The MAAA won the cup again in 1894 and 1895.

How to Win the Stanley Cup

To win the Stanley Cup, a team must first make it to the playoffs. The playoffs are a series of games that are played between the teams that finish in first through eighth place in the NHL standings.

The winning team from each playoff series advances to the next round, until there is only one team left. The last team standing is the winner of the Stanley Cup.

This means that the Stanley Cup is awarded to the team that is the last one left in the playoffs. This can be a difficult task, as there are many teams that compete for the Stanley Cup each year.
