Kevin Durant is the reigning MVP of the NBA, but he’s never won a championship. This season will be his last chance to leave behind an imprint on history before retiring for good.
The “why do my ears ring when i lay down” is a question that has been asked and answered many times. The answer to the question is, “I’d Go Back to My Room and My Ears Would Ring For Hours.”
In the 1997 and 1998 NBA Finals, Phil Jackson and the Chicago Bulls had a formidable battle when they faced John Stockton, Karl Malone, and the Utah Jazz. Those games were made all the more difficult by the loud audience at the Delta Center.
In a journal he maintained for former Chicago Sun-Times writer Rick Telander during the 1998 NBA Playoffs, Jackson expounded on how crowd noise affected his coaching. The Zen Master went so far as to say that he required a specific sort of earplug to prevent irreversible hearing loss.

Despite dominating the 1990s, the Chicago Bulls struggled to defeat Utah on its home court. In 1997 and 1998, this was particularly true.
In November 1996, the Bulls lost their only regular-season encounter against the Jazz at the Delta Center. During the Finals, it became much more difficult.
The first two games were won by Chicago in the United Center, while the next two were lost in Utah. Without Michael Jordan’s miraculous Game 5 effort, which became known as the “Flu Game,” Phil Jackson and the Bulls would have lost their hold on the series totally.
The two teams played again the following summer, with the Jazz having the benefit of playing at home. After going 2-0 against the Bulls during the regular season, Utah was certainly bolstered by playing at home. The Jazz did indeed win Game 1 in overtime.
Chicago, on the other hand, showed amazing courage. It won Game 2 in Salt Lake City and then won a difficult Game 6 behind Jordan’s 45 points in Chicago after capturing 2-of-3 in the Windy City.
The Bulls were victorious in hostile territory, defeating the Jazz. But it came at a high price, particularly for Jackson.
To combat crowd noise, Phil Jackson donned customized earplugs.
Phil Jackson needed some help before he could feel at ease coaching the Bulls in Utah.
Jackson disclosed that an audiologist supplied him earplugs ahead of the 1997 NBA Finals in a personal journal (h/t ESPN) written during the 1998 NBA Playoffs. In 1998, he wore them to games at the Delta Center, noticing how raucous Jazz fans could be, particularly before the game started.
“When we arrived to the Delta Center for Game 1 of the Finals, the noise was incredible. When we faced Utah in the Finals last year, I donned earplugs that an audiologist had provided to me. She warned me that I should be concerned about long-term ear damage, and I am. The level of noise is really too high. Last year, when I returned to my room, my ears would be ringing for hours. The motorbike noises have been toned down a little, but the opening remains the worst – the explosives, flares, and balloons exploding in sequence.”

Utah used to deploy a variety of theatrics to enthrall the home fans.
Before the games, the Jazz had motorbikes roaring and pyrotechnics blasting across the stadium, as Jackson noted. A superfan known only as “Jazzman” was decked up in team apparel and face paint.
Michael Jordan’s children said in The Last Dance that their mother thought Utah’s climate was too “aggressive” for young children, which is why they never went to road games in Salt Lake. It’s easy to understand Jackson’s choice, given his explanation and concerns about hearing loss.
Jackson had better success as the Lakers’ head coach at the Delta Center.

While the Zen Master undoubtedly believed that ’98 would be the last time he had to coach against the Jazz in the playoffs, he returned to Utah in 2008 with the Los Angeles Lakers for postseason basketball. At first, the outcomes seemed to be comparable.
During the 2008 Western Conference playoffs, the Lakers established a 2-0 lead against the Jazz, only for the Jazz to tie the series at the Delta Center. That season, Utah won 54 games and used the home crowd to claw back into the series.
Game 5 was held in Los Angeles, which was fortunate for Jackson and the Lakers. Thanks to 34 points from Kobe Bryant, the Lakers restored the lead at home before finishing off the series in Game 6 at the Delta Center.
The next season, the two teams reunited in the first round, and LA handily defeated the Jazz in five games, though Utah did win Game 3 at home. In the 2010 Western Conference semifinals, Jackson and company swept the Jazz their way to a second straight title.
Despite the fact that Phil Jackson’s teams trounced the Jazz in the playoffs, he seemed to recognize how difficult it would be to win at the Delta Center.
Basketball Reference provided the statistics.
Michael Jordan dreaded returning to Utah for Game 6 of the 1998 Finals because Jazz fans were so rowdy: ‘To the Utah Fans, You Guys Are a Tough Bunch to Play in Front Of,’ says the player.
