The Los Angeles Rams are set to play the New Orleans Saints in a game that has been dubbed the “Battle of LA”. Will the Rams be able to win their first game since 2016?
Jared Goff is ready to end the NFL’s most embarrassing streak and extract his revenge on the Rams in a single afternoon. The Rams have been struggling with their offense, but Goff has been making plays all year long. He will be looking to do just that against Oakland this weekend.
Highlights of the article:
- Before a Week 7 game with the Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions quarterback Goff, Jared mentioned “disrespect.”
- Goff, the 2016 first-round selection, spent his first five seasons with the Rams before being dealt to the Lions earlier this year.
- When Rams head coach Sean McVay isn’t coaching him, the two-time Pro Bowler is 0-13 as a starter.
Jared Goff, the former quarterback of the Los Angeles Rams, is returning home, and he has a lot on his plate once he arrives in California.
Goff, the No. 1 overall selection in 2016, was dealt by the Rams to the Detroit Lions earlier this year in exchange for Matthew Stafford. An upset win would not only put a smile on the two-time Pro Bowler’s face when he returned to Detroit, but it would also help him stop what is still probably the NFL’s most humiliating skid.
Before facing Sean McVay and the Rams, Jared Goff made a reference to ‘disrespect.’
“The sourness is still there from how it ended,” Jared Goff said upon his return to LA, “but there’s so much more of wonderful things that occurred that make you grateful for those moments…” pic.twitter.com/iVVbHUMv1H

Goff finished 42-20 under Sean McVay as his head coach in four seasons with the Rams, throwing 102 touchdowns to 48 interceptions and reaching the playoffs three times. Most teams would be happy with those statistics from their quarterback, and they’d love to make it to the Divisional Round three times.
The marriage did not end with a Super Bowl ring or a peaceful divorce. In fact, McVay recently said that he wishes the head coach and quarterback had “better, clearer communication” leading up to the deal, which was agreed upon in January and made public less than two months later.
Goff reacted to McVay’s remarks at a recent news conference, according to ProFootballTalk. Although the seventh-year quarterback is looking forward to seeing members of the Rams organization, he is not dismissing the significance of the matchup.
“Of course you have a chip on your shoulder; I’ve already said it. Toward the conclusion, there was a sense of contempt. There was a sour note towards the conclusion. “And you still have that chip on your shoulder,” she says.

Without McVay as his head coach, Goff is 0-13 in his career. His teams have been outscored 393-214 when he had Jeff Fisher, John Fassel, and Dan Campbell leading the way.
Goff stated of his impending trip to Los Angeles, “I’m going to play the game like any other game.” “And, to be honest, I’m not concerned about feeling anything until the game begins. I honestly don’t.”
If Goff is going to beat a powerful Rams defense, he’ll have to play his best game ever.
The fact that Goff is still winless without McVay as his head coach is maybe the most humiliating and perplexing skid in the NFL. Even Jets supporters who haven’t seen their club make the playoffs since January 2011 may feel obliged to point and laugh at someone else’s suffering for a change.
Not all of it is Goff’s fault, particularly after seeing his defense crumble in last-second defeats to the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings this season. But he hasn’t helped things or risen to the occasion in the manner that one would expect from a first-round quarterback.
Things aren’t going to get any easier against the Rams, who are 5-1. The defense of first-year defensive coordinator Raheem Morris is allowing just 21.2 points per game, which is the league’s ninth-best margin. Aaron Donald, an All-Pro defensive tackle, leads the club with 3.5 sacks, while veteran pass rusher Leonard Floyd leads the squad with 4.5 quarterback takedowns.
Taylor Rapp, a third-year safety, and Jalen Ramsey, an All-Pro cornerback, head a fearsome secondary capable of giving Goff difficulties all day. The boisterous audience at SoFi Stadium will almost certainly express their preference for Stafford over Goff.
If Goff is going to beat the Rams, he’ll have to play his best game ever. McVay would not have traded for Stafford in the first place if he thought the California product was capable of anything like that.
Goff’s time in Detroit may be cut short if he has a poor performance.

In terms of passing statistics, Goff has completed 66.8% of his throws for almost 4,300 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Those would be great statistics for a rookie quarterback like Trevor Lawrence or a bridge quarterback on a low contract in 2021, both in terms of the 17-game season and how much the game has evolved.
We can’t say the same for a seventh-year quarterback who is signed to a four-year, $134 million deal. Goff has been much too average for a rebuilding club looking for its next franchise quarterback, while not playing poorly to begin his Lions career.
Campbell has previously said that Goff must “step up” as quarterback. The Lions may be inclined to swap quarterbacks soon if the veteran performs badly against his former club. Since the start of last season, David Blough, a 26-year-old backup quarterback, has thrown 10 passes.
Goff, who is 27 years old, still has plenty of time to sort out his career. How did he do with the Lions? Detroit, on the other hand, has two first-round choices in 2022 and may feel obliged to spend one of them on a quarterback. Matt Corral of Ole Miss is a strong contender to be the first overall pick in next year’s draft. Depending on how far they fall, the club may go with Liberty’s Malik Willis or North Carolina’s Sam Howell if they wait and utilize the Rams’ selection.
Meanwhile, Stafford has the Rams looking like a squad capable of winning their first Super Bowl since January 2000. Even if Goff exacts his vengeance in Week 7, his old team is likely to emerge victorious. Given both teams’ recent histories, we anticipate the Rams to have some laughs at their former QB.
