If you’ve ever been interested in learning how to box, this is the guide for you. In this post, we’ll go over the basics of boxing, including how to throw a jab and a cross, as well as how to block and dodge punches. So whether you’re a complete beginner or just looking to improve your technique, keep reading for some helpful tips on how to box like a pro!

What is a split decision in boxing

In boxing, a split decision is a result in which two of the three judges score the fight for different boxers, resulting in a majority draw. This can happen when one judge scores the fight for the boxer and the other two judges score it for the opponent, or when two judges score it for the boxer and one judge scores it for the opponent.

Jab

The jab is the most basic punch in boxing, and it’s also one of the most important. A jab is thrown by leading with your non-dominant hand and extending your arm straight out from your shoulder. The key to a good jab is to keep your elbow close to your body and snap your punch out quickly.

Cross

The cross is the second most important punch in boxing, and it’s typically thrown after a jab. A cross is thrown by leading with your dominant hand and extending your arm out from your shoulder. The key to a good cross is to keep your elbow close to your body and rotate your hips as you punch.

Block

Blocking is an essential part of boxing, and it’s something you should be doing every time your opponent throws a punch. There are two main types of blocks: high blocks and low blocks. High blocks are used to block punches that are aimed at your head, while low blocks are used to block punches that are aimed at your body.

Dodge

Dodging is another important defensive move in boxing, and it’s often used in conjunction with blocking. When you dodge a punch, you’re essentially moving your head out of the way of your opponent’s punch. This can be done by leaning to the side, ducking down, or even stepping to the side.

 Training tips for beginners

1. Start with the jab

When you’re starting out, it’s a good idea to focus on the jab. This is the most basic punch in boxing, and it’s also one of the most important. A good jab can keep your opponent at bay and set up other punches.

2. Keep your elbow close to your body

When you throw a punch, you want to make sure that your elbow stays close to your body. This will help you generate more power and increase your chances of landing a hit.

3. Rotate your hips when you punch

Another thing that will help you generate more power when punching is rotating your hips as you throw the punch. This will help transfer energy from your lower body to your upper body, resulting in a stronger punch.

4. Don’t forget to block

Blocking is an important part of boxing, and you should be doing it every time your opponent throws a punch. There are two main types of blocks: high blocks and low blocks. High blocks are used to block punches that are aimed at your head, while low blocks are used to block punches that are aimed at your body.

5. Practice your footwork

Footwork is another important aspect of boxing, and it’s something that you should be practicing regularly. Good footwork will help you move around the ring quickly and efficiently, as well as help you set up punches.
