Seattle Seahawks Miss the Playoffs, But Positive Signs Are There

Meredith Nasrall January 23, 2025 8 min read

The Seattle Seahawks failed to reach the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Usually, this would result in doom and gloom around Lumen Field, but not this time; the fans, roster, and coaching staff are full of confidence for the 2025 regular season. New head coach Mike Macdonald set his team the target of winning the Super Bowl, and although the Seahawks came up short, the 2024 campaign was full of positives.

The Seahawks last reached the Super Bowl in 2014, where they lost 24-28 to the New England Patriots. Since then, they’ve fallen at the Divisional Playoffs stage three times, the Wild Card round thrice, and not reached the playoffs four times. That lack of postseason form meant those making Super Bowl LIX bets online did not have the Seahawks in their thoughts, but that will change when the 2025 campaign kicks off in September.

What Cost the Seahawks This Season?

Football is often a game of fine margins, and the Seahawks missed out on the excitement of the playoffs by the narrowest of them. After finishing the season with a 10-7 record, the Seahawks lost out on an NFC West title by the fifth tiebreaker, strength of victory. They were the only team with a 10-7 record that didn’t progress to this season’s playoffs.

The team got off to a flying start in 2024, winning its first three games. However, the Seahawks lost five of their next six games and went into the bye week nursing a 4-5 record. That losing streak ultimately cost the team a playoff berth because they went 6-2 in the second half of the season yet still fell short.

Home form was the most significant issue for the Seahawks this year. They were 3-6 at Lumen Field, with all those defeats, except for a disappointing 20-29 loss against the lackluster New York Giants, coming against playoff-reaching teams. You have to make your home stadium a fortress if you want to challenge for the Super Bowl.

The offensive line failed to protect its quarterback too many times. Teams sacked Geno Smith 50 times for 338 yards lost, allowing 54 sacks (third worst in the league) and 359 lost yards (fourth worst in the league) in total.

Reasons For Positivity Around Lumen Field

Despite its shortcomings, the 2024 Seahawks season should be viewed positively. Not only did they narrowly miss out on the playoffs, but they won ten games, went 7-1 on the road, and managed those results despite a slew of coaching changes during the offseason. Remember that this was the Seahawks’ first season since 2009 that Pete Carroll was not head coach.

Several individuals enjoyed excellent seasons. Quarterback Geno Smith continues turning back the years. He put up his best figures in passes attempted (578) and completed (407) and passing yards (4,320) of his career. Smith only featured in 15 games between 2015 and 2021 but has made the QB1 position his own since breaking into the team in 2022. If the Seahawks’ offensive line can better protect Smith in 2025, there is no telling the numbers he could produce.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s second season as a professional player was one to remember. He started all 17 regular season games as a wide receiver and enjoyed 100 receptions for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns. Smith-Njigba’s receiving yards ranked him 12th in the league. DK Metcalfe also chipped in with 992 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet bore the brunt of the Seahawks’ rushing game throughout the 2024 regular season. Walker III racked up 542 yards from 145 attempts despite injuries limiting him to 12 games. Charbonnet made 569 yards from 135 carries from 17 games, although he only started six times. If those two remain fit in 2025, the Seahawks will have a strong ground game that will worry any opposition’s defense.

Three players finished 2024 with more than 90 tackles. Linebacker Ernest Jones IV had 94 tackles, cornerback Devon Witherspoon stopped 98 players, and safety Julian Love topped the Seahawks’ tackle count with 108 stops.

What Did the Head Coach Have to Say?

Macdonald spoke to the media after the 2024 regular season concluded, and he was in a buoyant mood.

“Well, I wanted to win the Super Bowl. In order to do that, you’ve got to win games, you’ve got to make the dance, you want to win your division, you’ve got to win your conference, then you win the Super Bowl. We did a lot of the first goal; we won 10 of our games; we didn’t achieve any other goals, so ultimately, we fell short. But there are other things we felt we did well, and we’re building a position to attack this thing moving forward.”

“We’re just really optimistic, fired up for what’s ahead of us with the direction our team is going. Obviously, we wanted to fight it out in the playoffs, and we felt like we had a good enough team to do some damage, but we didn’t earn the right to do that. So we’re moving on, but man, we’re excited about what’s to come, working through what the offseason will look like, making some tweaks, and how we evolve.  All that stuff’s ahead of us. How we build our roster, all those decisions, finding a new offensive coordinator, all those things. It’s an exciting time; I’m excited about the foundation that we’ve been able to lay and ready to get back to work.”

Seahawks Head for a Deserved Break

Everyone connected to the Seahawks now heads on a much-needed and well-deserved break, but they’ll be back in action soon enough. Although the 2025 regular season does not start until September 4, the Seahawks will return for offseason workouts on April 21, the 2025 NFL Draft happens from April 24-26, and then preseason training begins. It’s an exciting time to be a Seahawks fan.
