The Mariners hired Jack Zduriencik as general manager Wednesday, the team announced in a press release. Zduriencik comes from the Milwaukee Brewers organization where he was vice president and special assistant to the general manager for player personnel since January 2008. The 57-year-old Pennsylvania native is regarded as a skilled talent evaluator, especially when it comes to the draft. Zduriencik (pronounced Zur-EN-sik) is credited as having large influence over the selections of Brewers shortstop J.J. Hardy, first baseman Prince Fielder, second baseman Rickie Weeks and outfielder Ryan Braun. Zduriencik was named Baseball America's Executive of the Year in 2007, becoming the first non-general manager to win the award. Zduriencik has worked for the Mets, Dodgers Pirates and Brewers, spending the last nine years with the latter. He has been in professional baseball for 24 years. The Mariners will hold a press conference Friday morning, an off-day for the World Series, to officially announce the hiring.
